As part of the 6th International Virtual Conference organized by Linguist Education Online (LEO), whose theme is “United We Grow,” I’ll be joining Tanya Quintieri and Valeria Aliperta to talk about organization and productivity.

Being a language professional isn't only about bridging the communication gap between source and target languages. If you're working for yourself, you will also need to organize your resources and schedule and learn more about yourself in order to set realistic productivity expectations and build a sustainable language business in the long term. During our discussion panel, we will share some of our decades-long experiences as language professionals and entrepreneurs to help brainstorm ideas on how to organize yourself and be productive in your daily tasks.

Language Professionals Are a Company of One

Language Professionals Are a Company of One

Being a language professional goes beyond offering language services. Not only must we be ready to meet communication-related challenges while getting a message across to the target audience, but we must also learn how to become entrepreneurs while managing our careers. Notwithstanding our business status, we must see ourselves as “A Company of One” and literally take care of business, which includes keeping up with new technology, managing our time and resources, investing in continuing education, finding a niche, adapting our skills, and diversifying our services. Beyond language skills, translators, interpreters, and other independent contractors must acquire the practical knowledge required to thrive in their day-to-day business activities.

In this presentation, I will talk about what I have learned after assisting over 575 students during my twelve years of experience as a translation instructor at UC San Diego Extension and discuss the work of preparing beginning translators as they plan for a freelancing and telecommuting career.

Subtitle Template Creation

Subtitle Template Creation

Join me on May 31 at this Proz Meet Up event
to talk about subtitle template creation:

As content creation is booming in streaming platforms and more international movies, series, and documentaries are being shared worldwide, there is a need for English templates to be created so that subtitlers who do not speak a source language can use English as a proxy language. For example, "Squid Game" could have been just another Korean series on Netflix if it hadn't been translated into several languages and watched the world over―and its instant success was only made possible because English was used as a bridge for translators who did not work with Korean as a source language.
