Dad Is Cool and Mom Rocks: A Wild Ride Translating a Husband-and-Wife Book Series on Parenting

Dad is Cool and Mom Rocks are short story collections about parenting written by Brazilian journalist and radio personality Marcos Piangers and his wife Ana Cardoso, who is also a journalist and women's rights activist. The speaker will read from the books and discuss how the Portuguese>English translation was challenging in some areas–dynamic writing style, colorful descriptions, a few local expressions–but extremely rewarding in others. While these stories are about raising two young daughters in Brazil, the events narrated by the author translated easily into English with minor language adjustments, proving that parenting is indeed a universal experience.

Translators and Self-Published Authors ― A Partnership for the New Digital Publishing Age

  • Proz.com

With the advent of self-publishing platforms―such as Lulu.com and CreateSpace.com for print-on-demand (POD) books and Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing and Smashwords for digital formats―authors have been cutting the middlemen (agents and publishers) out of the equation. Writers can now offer their books directly to the audience, tapping into the power of social media to face fierce criticism or rest on their laurels after attracting a loyal fan base. Considering this shift in the publishing paradigm, the role of book translators has changed as well. Instead of having to wait for a project to be assigned by a publisher, we now have the alternative of creating a partnership with these self-published authors and bring their books to international audiences.

Profiling The New Generation Of Translators

This presentation doesn't deal with literary translation, but with my teaching activities. After teaching Tools & Technology in Translation as part of the English/Spanish Professional Certificate in Translation offered by the University of California, San Diego Extension for the past four years, I've gathered some interesting material about beginners that I'd like to share with those present and make an attempt at drafting a profile for the new generation of translators.

How To Self-Publish Your Translations

  • Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers

This session will build upon the material I presented last year for "Translators And Self-Published Authors: A Partnership For The New Digital Publishing Age," which in turn was an expansion on the article I wrote for the ATA Chronicle about my work with self-published authors. This time, we'll discuss alternatives to self-publish a book you've written or translated and have the final product as both paperback through print-on-demand services and as a digital book for electronic reading.
